Worship : What it truly means

It is so disheartening that the church has lost this ancient landmark and is on chasing after selfish interests -  We have become asking machines without ever thinking about what this God we claim to serve ever wants us to do.
Worship means death. OK, I know you might be shocked at how blunt this fact is but it's nonetheless true. I don't mean literarily falling down and breathing your last because the bible says only the living can praise the Lord. Most people fail to realise that when they indeed worship God in spirit and in truth, the flesh is eradicated out of the scene. We have to get this cleared up. Worship means total surrenderedness. It's not just about singing a slow emotional song with eyes closed and hands lifted up. That's just an offspring of genuine worship. True worship springs up from a heart that sees nothing else but God alone.

Components of true worship.

  • Humility: let's take the scenerio of Esther's approach to the King's court as a case study. If she had come carelessly and with an air of pomp and disregard for the majesty of the king, we know well enough to guess that the scepter might not have been stretched at her and she and her people would have been obliterated. So also as Christians, we must humble ourselves before the Lord with all sense of our unworthiness and bow in awe of his majestic glory. There's a scripture I so much love in the Bible because it reassures that what God accepts isn't necessarily a voice as melodious as a Nightingale's but rather a humble heart which is like a sweet symphony to His ears, a sweet- smelling savour to His nostrils and a beautiful scenery to behold. Psalm 51:17 "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart o God, thou will not despise."
  • Adoration: The more we gaze upon Him, the deeper we can worship Him in the beauty of holiness. The more we meditate upon His mighty deeds, the more we can testify that He is terrible in His dealings with the sons of men. Adoration is birthed from personal encounter or knowledge of the object of our worship. Nehemiah 9:6 " Thou, even though art Lord alone; thou hast made the heavens, the heaven of heavens with all their host, the earth and all things that are therein, the seas and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all, and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.
  • Continuance: Never ending worship springs from a life that abides in Him. In our every breath we worship. In every step we take, we love Him. The fire of worship must always be burning on the altar of sacrifice. That's how the angels and elders and saints in heaven heaven do it. We must learn to worship Him at all times while here on earth if we must qualify for eternal worship in heaven.      As believers, our eyes being enlightened, we should take up the mantle of worship while taking off and rending that of the flesh and pride. May our worship be to God a sweet savour that He cannot despise. Shalom.
